Coleman Tech Charter High School has adopted the GIST Cancer Awareness Foundation as their community service project. GCAF is extremely honored to have been selected by the Coleman faculty and students for their program.

Coleman Tech Charter High School Students Write a Book To Help Support GIST Research
While other students are reading books, students at Colemant Tech Charter High School are busy writing them.

Coleman Tech students wrote the ebook entitled A Teenage Tribute which has over 25 short stories and poems and is available for sale on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords. This book can be read essentially from any ereader that has access to the book. The cost is only $2.99.

When asked how the project came to be, Mrs. McKinney, physics teacher at Coleman Tech and Ms. Lowenstein, English teacher at Coleman Tech stated that they worked with a group of students who agreed to write short stories with the theme of “Relationships” to be compiled into a book that would be sold electronically. Ms. McKinney noted that, students not only had to write their story, but they had to electronically peer edit and upload documents using cloud computing methods, which is a hallmark of Coleman Tech Charter High School. Students were then asked to do the bulk of the editing, develop a title, design the cover art, set a sales goal, and make a website. She also noted that, the entire process had allowed students to take part in the major steps of publication and marketing, including the use of social media to aid in publicity. Students will also learn how to track sales and create graphs of profit, all necessary tools of any business venture, making this more that just a book, but a project-based learning opportunity. Though this project is a huge undertaking for any writer, much less a group of teenagers, it is only one of many projects that CTCHS has planned this year.

The proceeds from the sales will be given to support the GIST Cancer Awareness Foundation which raises awareness and money for research of a unique type of cancer: gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Throughout the school year, students will continue to learn about GIST and other types of cancer and explore current research in order to properly educate themselves about this dangerous disease and to also better provide awareness to their community.
